Eucharistic Adoration
“The celebration of the Eucharist is the center of
the entire Christian life, both for the Church universal and for the local
congregations of the Church.” This quote is from the rite for Holy
Communion and Worship of the Eucharist outside Mass. It might at
first seem odd that this quote should appear in a document about worship
of the Eucharist outside of Mass, but that is the most appropriate place
to begin.
The Constitution on the Liturgy of the Second
Vatican Council makes it clear that the center of life for Catholics is
the Mass. The "full, conscious and active participation" of the faithful
was highly recommended by the Council fathers. The highest form of worship
is the Liturgy, but that doesn’t mean that it is to be the only means of
prayer and worship.
Eucharistic adoration becomes an extension of -- and not a substitute
for -- the saving act of Christ in his surrender to the Father. This
is revealed each time that we participate at Mass. Eucharistic adoration
is one of the most important ways in which the presence of Christ continues
in the Church following the celebration of Mass. It is meant both
to help us sanctify everything we do and to draw us back to our next celebration
of the Eucharist.
Appreciating this dynamic is essential in keeping
Eucharistic adoration in its proper perspective. What we do at the Eucharist
is to eat and drink deeply of the food of our salvation. Adoration outside
of Mass is meant to stimulate our appetites, as it were, for our next sacred
meal. So, while Eucharistic Adoration is not meant to take the place of
Mass or rank in higher importance, it does seem that it offers an opportunity
for Catholics to pray in silent love and adoration. Since the Mass
is active and communal in nature, Eucharistic Adoration is passive and
personal. Both are important dimensions in the Christian life.
I heartily encourage everyone to take advantage
of this form of prayer when it is offered in the parish. If, however,
because of work obligations that it is not possible to come on a First
Friday, our Chapel of Reposition is open 24 hours a day for private prayer
and adoration. Don’t forget to make a visit if you have a meeting
in the Church or are on your way home from work. It might just be
the way to bring everything else into focus.
The Form of the Eucharist Throughout my five
years at St. Clare we have used baked bread for our celebrations of the
Eucharist. I have written on numerous occasions how this form seems
to give us a fuller expression of the Eucharist as meal. It more
fully resembles bread than the wafers used in many churches. Yet,
I have also heard that some people are nervous about chewing the host.
Please know that it is acceptable and necessary to chew
the Eucharist when using baked bread for the sacred species.
Likewise, since it will be heartier than a wafer it is suggested that one
consume a small portion of the Precious Blood. This completes the fuller
expression of Eucharist and allows for complete consumption of the
Body of Christ.
With all of that said, I am aware that some people are still not
used to this practice. Does it matter to you what the Body and Blood
of Christ are made from? Remember it is no longer bread and wine,
but truly Christ. If it matters to you please complete the form below

Adoración Eucaristica
"La celebración
de la Eucaristia es el centro de toda la vida Cristiana, tanto para la
Iglesia universal y para la congregación de la Iglesia." Esta frase
es del rito para la Santa Comunion y Adoración fuera de la Misa.
A principio se vió un poco raro que esta frase apareciera en un
documento sobre la adoración de la Eucaristia fuera de la Misa,
pero ese es el sitio mas apropiado para comenzar.
La Contitución
de la Liturgia del Consejo Vaticano Segundo hace claro de que el centro
de la vida de los Católicos és la Misa. Una "completa, cociensuda
y activa participación" de los fieles fué altamente recomendada
por los padres del Consejo. La forma mas alta de adoración es la
Liturgia, pero eso no quiere decir que sea único vehiculo para la
oració y adoración.
La adoració
Eucaristica se hace una extención de—y no sustituto para—el acto
salvifico de Cristo en su entrega al Padre. Esto se revela cada vez que
participamos de la Misa. La adoración Eucaristica es una de la forma
mas importante en que la precencia de Cristo continua en la Iglesia despues
de la celebración de la Misa. Es el medio para santificar todo lo
que hacemos y llevarnos de regreso a nuestra proxima celebración
de la Eucaristia.
Apreciando ésta
dinamica es esencial para mantener la adoración Eucaristica en su
apropiada perspectiva. Lo que hacemos en la Eucaristia es comer y beber
profundamente de la comida de nuestra salvación. La adoración
fuera de la Misa es el medio para estimular nuestro apetito, como fuese,
para nuestra proxima comida.
Entonces, mientras la
Adoración Eucaristica no se pretende que tome el lugar de la Misa
o sea grado de mayor importancia, si parece que ofrece una oportunidad
para que los Católicos oren en amor silencioso y adoración.
Como la Misa es activa y comunal en naturaleza, la Adoración Eucaristica
es pasiva y personal. Ambas son importantes dimensiones en la vida Cristiana.
Yo les estimulo de corazón
a todos que tomen esa oportunidad de oración cuando se ofrece en
la parroquia. Pero, claro, si a causa de la obligación de trabajo
les es imposible venir los Primeros Viernes, nuestra Capilla de Reposición
permanece abierta 24 horas del dia para oración y adoración
privada. No se olviden hacer la visita cuando tengan una reunion o de
camino a sus hogares. Puede ser la forma de traer todo a lo claro La Forma
de la Eucaristia
Durante los cinco años
que tengo en Santa Clara hemos estado usando pan horneado para la celebración
de la Eucaristia. He escrito en varias ocaciones como esta forma nos da
una plena expreción de la Eucaristia como comida. Se parece mas
a pan que las galletas que se usan en muchas iglesias. Sin embargo, tambien
he oido que algunas personas se ponen nerviosas masticando la hostia. Por
favor sepan que es aceptable y necesario
masticar la Eucaristia cuando se usa pan horneado para la sagrada
especies. De la misma forma, como es mas grueso que la galleta se sugiere
que uno consuma una pequeña porción de la Preciosa Sangre.
Esto completa de lleno la expreción de Eucaristia y les permite
un completo consumo del Cuerpo de Cristo.
Con todo esto dicho,
estoy al tanto que algunas personas todabia no estan acostumbradas a esta
practica. ¿Les importa a ustedes de qué está hecho
el Cuerpo y la Sangre de Cristo? Recuerden no es simplemente pan y vino,
pero verdaderamente el Cuerpo de Cristo. Si les importa por favor llenen
