The Jubilee Year

 Beginning in November our parish will observe its 10th anniversary.  Coincidental with that anniversary will be the Universal Church's celebration of the 2000th year of Christ's birth.  It has been declared a Holy Year, a Jubilee Year.  The last Holy Year was in 1983.  Pope John Paul II called that year to remember the 1950th year since our salvation.  Since Jubilee Years come so infrequently, it might be good to ask, what will this mean.  Pope John Paul II in his apostolic letter Incarnationis Mysterium writes:

 Every Jubilee Year is like an invitation to a  wedding feast. From the different Churches and Ecclesial Communities throughout the world, let  us all hasten to the feast now being prepared; let us bring with us everything that already unites us and, by fixing our gaze on Christ alone, let us grow in the unity which is the fruit of the Spirit. The present task of the Bishop of Rome, as the Successor of Peter, is to make the invitation to the Jubilee celebration all the more insistent, in order that the two thousandth anniversary of the central mystery of the Christian faith may be experienced as a journey of reconciliation and a sign of true hope for all who look to Christ and to his Church, the sacrament of intimate union with God and the unity of the entire human race.

We are called as a Church to make this a journey of reconciliation.  The Pope notes some ways that can happen in this letter.  He says that there should be a fervent prayer for unity among the churches.  He suggests that conversion of heart take place among all Catholics.  That is the only way for Jubilee to be authentic.

 Pilgrimages are often undertaken during a Holy Year.  To journey to Rome or the Holy Land can be a tangible sign of movement of the heart away from sin and a turning towards Christ more fully.  If that is not possible, places of pilgrimage can be set up in other areas.  Look forward to seeing where Bishop Dorsey  will proclaim churches worthy of pilgrimage next year.

 The opening of the Holy Door is another such symbol of conversion.  The psalms speak of entering the House of God with a clean heart.  To cross the threshold of the Holy Door presumes leaving something behind to begin something anew.  The Holy Door in Rome and in Bethlehem are symbols of turning away from sin and entering into the grace Christ has open for all believers.

 Another sign of Jubilee is the remission of sins and the Indulgence.  There are specific guidelines for receiving the indulgence of a Holy Year.  Generally it requires the reception of the Sacrament of Reconciliation, Eucharist, and an act of charity or mercy.  Certainly these are practices we should do all the time, not just with an indulgence in mind.  We are made conscious of the fact of the wideness of God's mercy in a Holy Year.  So, to seek the indulgence is to seek God more fully in our lives.

 We must remember the martyrs especially the many men and women who have lost their lives in the pursuit of justice this century.  The Pope has called all nations to submit names of people worthy of honor this year, even those not Catholic.

 Greater solidarity of rich and poor is called for.  It is unjust for the poor to be denied basic necessities when the wealthy have so much.  The Holy Father is calling wealthy nations this Jubilee Year to seriously consider ways of relieving international debt and of alleviating the poverty of so much of the world.

 All of these things are what the Jubilee Year is about.  How does that affect us as the parish of St. Clare celebrating our 10th anniversary?  I suggest that an anniversary committee be called to work on tangible ways to implement the Jubilee in our parish.  Sacramental celebrations, social events, and activities to promote justice and mercy in West Volusia should all be part of our celebration.  If you believe that you would like to help our parish and our area celebrate well, please prayerfully consider being a part of this committee.

 Perhaps we can do something new to liberate those captive in fear, economic despair, or in sin.  My  wish would be that our parish grows in holiness this year.  By the beginning of our 11th year I hope that we will have re-discovered the true source of grace, Christ the Lord.

Let There Be Peace on Earth and Let It Begin With Me

 One Easter years ago, Jill and Sy Miller heard a radio message of peace - peace that would surely come when every person lived it.  Jill was inspired to write the words to this now familiar song, and her husband wrote the music.  A song leader took it to a camp where 180 youngsters sang it, and shared it when they returned to their homes, schools, and churches.  Many organizations began including it in their programs.  It is now a very popular song all over the world.  Many churches sing it at the end of their services.
 Personal peace did not come easily for Jill.  Motherless at three, rejected by a stepmother by five, she became a ward of the Kansas City Juvenile Court at the age of nine.
 After an unhappy adolescence, she left Missouri for Hollywood and, as Jill Jackson, became a heroine in a movie.  After her unhappy first marriage ended, she reached total despair.  It was then that she reached out and found inspiration.  She dedicated herself to live each day fully, joyously, gloriously.
 The Millers have made no money from "Let There Be Peace on Earth."  It is their gift to the world.  They always give permission to use it.  Their interest is in people teaching peace, singing it, and beginning afresh each day to reach out to humankind in peace.

Jesus teaches that God is to be worshipped "in Spirit and truth" (Jn 4:23-24), but no one can (even) say, "Jesus is Lord," except by the Holy Spirit" (1 Cor. 12:3).
 Because the attainment of Christ-like holiness and the completion of Christ's mission are both totally supernatural goals, no one can move forward in either direction without first being empowered by the Holy Spirit.

WHERE WILL YOU SPEND YOUR SUMMER?
The Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul extend an invitation to single women between the ages of 19-40 to share one or two weeks of their summer to serve the poor.  This is a live-in program with the Sisters to assist them in their ministry to the poor by providing health care, education and social ministry to children, to the elderly, and to the homeless.  Opportunities to serve exist in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia and Northern Florida.  For further information, contact Sister Maureen Houlihan, D.C., Post Office Box 358, Gloverville, SC  29828 or call (803) 593-5158.
 

EL AÑO DEL JUBILEO 2000
Empezando el próximo mes de noviembre, nuestra parroquia entra en su Aniversario Num. 10.  Coincidiendo con ese aniversario, la Iglesia Universal celebra el Año Num. 2000 desde el nacimiento de Cristo.  El último Año Santo fue en el 1983.  El Papa Juan Pablo II declaró ese año para recordar que era el año 1950 desde nuestra salvación.  Ya que los Años Jubilares surjen con tan poca frecuencia, sería bueno preguntarnos, que significa este tipo de año.  El Papa en su Carta Apostólica Incarnationis Mysterium, escribe:

 Cada Año Jubilar es como una invitación a una fiesta de bodas. Desde las diferentes fiestas en las iglesias y comunidades eclesiales a través del mundo, venimos a prisa a la que ya está siendo preparada; debemos traer con nosotros todo lo que ya nos une y, fijando nuestra  mirada  exclusivamente en Cristo, tratar de crecer en la unidad, que es el fruto del Espíritu.  La tarea vigente denuestro Obispo de Roma, como Sucesor de Pedro, es de invitarnos a la celebración del Jubileo en forma insistente,  de manera que el aniversario dos mil del misterio central de la fe cristiana pueda ser vivido como una jornada de reconciliación y un signo de la verdadera esperanza con la que todos miramos a Cristo y a su Iglesia, el sacramento de la íntima unión con Dios y con toda la raza humana.

 Hemos sido llamados como Iglesia a completar esa jornada de reconciliación.  El Papa indica en su Carta las formas en que ésto puede realizarse. El sugiere que debe hacerse una ferviente oración por la unidad entre todas las iglesias.  El recomienda que una conversión del corazón tenga lugar en todos los católicos.  Esa es la única forma en que el Jubileo puede ser auténtico para cada católico.

 Con frecuencia se realizan peregrinajes durante el Año Santo.  Un viaje a Roma o a la Tierra Santa puede ser evidencia de una reacción de corazón para alejarse del pecado y volverse a Cristo mas enteramente.  Si eso no es posible, pueden organizarse peregrinajes a otras areas.  Estén pendientes de la proclamación por el Obispo Dorsey sobre iglesias merecedoras de visitarse en peregrinaje el próximo año.

           El abrir de la Puerta Santa en el Vaticano en Roma y en Belen son otro símbolo de conversión.  Los salmos hablan de entrar a la casa de Dios con un corazón limpio. El cruzar el arco de la Puerta Santa presume dejar atrás algo para empezar de nuevo.  La Puerta Santa en Roma y en Belen son  símbolos de haber dejado el pecado y entrar a la gracia que Cristo abre a los creyentes.

 Otros signos del Jubileo son el perdón de nuestros pecados y las indulgencias.  Hay guias específicas sobre como recibir las indulgencias durante un Año Santo.  Generalmente se requiere recibir el Sacramento de Reconciliación y la Eucaristía, y   realizar un acto de caridad o misericordia.  Ciertamente que estas prácticas las debemos realizar siempre, no solo cuando hay una indulgencia en mente.  El Año Santo nos hace mas conscientes de la anchura de la misericordia de Dios.  Por lo tanto, buscar esa indulgencia es buscar mas íntimamente a Dios en nuestras vidas.

          Debemos recordar los mártires, especialmente los muchos hombres y mujeres que han perdido sus vidas en la búsqueda de la justicia en este siglo.  El Papa ha llamado a todas las naciones a someter nombres de personas merecedoras de honor en este siglo, incluyendo no-católicas.

           Se requiere mas solidaridad entre pobres y ricos.  No es justo que al pobre se le niegue las necesidades básicas cuando los ricos tienen tanto.  El Santo Padre está además llamando a las naciones ricas a considerar seriamente durante este Año Jubilar las maneras que se puede reducir la deuda internacional y aliviar la pobreza de muchos en el mundo.

            Todas esas cosas conciernen al Año Jubilar.  ¿Como éstas nos afecta a nosotros como Parroquia de Santa Clara, que celebra su Décimo Aniversario?  Este servidor sugiere que se cree un Comité de Aniversario para trabajar en maneras tangibles para implantar el Jubileo en nuestra parroquia.  Deben organizarse celebraciones sacramentales, eventos sociales y actividades para promover la justicia y misericordia en West Volusia, como parte de nuestra celebración.  Si usted cree que puede ayudar a nuestra parroquia y nuestra area a mejorar dicha celebración, por favor considere en oración la posibilidad de formar parte de dicho comité.

           Quizás podamos hacer algo nuevo para liberar aquellos cautivos por el miedo, los problemas económicos o el pecado.  Desearía que nuestra parroquia creciera en santidad este año.   Que para el inicio de nuestro año onceno, hayamos re-descubierto la verdadera fuente de la gracia, Jesuscristo.

PERMITE QUE HAY A PAZ EN EL MUNDO Y QUE EMPIECE EN MI
 Una vez, en Semana Santa hace varios años, Jill y Sy Miller oyeron un mensaje de paz por radio---"la paz vendrá cuando lavivan todas las personas." Jill se sintió inspirada a escribir la letra de su muy famosa canción y su esposo escribió la musica. Un director musical la llevó a un campamento donde 180 niños la cantaron y la compartieron cuando volvieron a sus casas, escuelas e iglesias. Muchas organizaciones empezaron a incluirla en sus programas. Ahora es una canción muy popular en todo el mundo. Inumerables iglesias la cantan al final de sus servicios.
 La paz no llegó a la vida Jill con facilidad. Se quedó sin madre a los tres anós, fue rechazada por su madrastra a los cinco, y se conviltió en una criatura de la Corte Juvenil de Kansas City a la edad de nueve.
Luego de una adolescencia infelíz, dejo a Missouri por Hollwwood y con el nombre de ,Jill Jackson se convirtió en heroina en una película. Luego de un primer matrimonio poco afortunado, que termin>, ella se sintió totalmente desgraciada. Fue ahí cuando busco ayuda y encontró su inrspiración. Se dedicó entonces por entero cada dia a vivir con intensidad , alegría y gloria.
 Los Millers no obtuvieron dinero de la canción "Let There Be Peace on Earth." Es su regalo al mundo entero. Ellos siempre autorizan a usarla Interesan que las personas cantándola enseñen paz, y empiezen cada dia nuevamente a acercarse en paz a la humanidad.

Jesus enseña que Dios es para adorar "en espiritu y verdad" (jn, 4:23-24), pero no qualquiera puede decir "Jeses es el Señor" excepto por el Espiritu Santo"(1 Cor. 12:3).
Por que el logro de casi Cristo Sagrado y completamente la mision de Cristo, son dos goles totalmente supernatural, uno no se puede adelantar en qualquier dirección sin primero haber sido apoderado del Espiritu Santo.
